The Infinity Exercise

The Infinity Exercise is a simple yet profound practice for creating space — space to breathe, space to see clearly, and space to return to yourself.

At first, you may wonder what this practice is really for.

Can it support manifestation and intention? Can it help us release what we no longer need? Can we use it when we feel overwhelmed, emotionally entangled or stressed? Can it bring us back into the present moment? Can it help us move towards greater peace, flow and harmony? And can it support the deeper journey of Self-Realisation?

The beautiful answer is that the Infinity Exercise can be explored in all of these ways — and its possibilities may reach much further.

Sometimes spiritual practice is most valuable in the very ordinary moments of life. The Infinity Exercise can be used while navigating everyday responsibilities, difficult conversations, emotional reactions or relationships that feel demanding. It offers a way of creating a little inner distance, allowing us to remain present without becoming absorbed in another person's energy, behaviour or expectations.

With practice, it can help us become more discerning about what belongs to us and what does not. Instead of reacting automatically, we have an opportunity to return to our centre and choose how we wish to respond.

As the mind becomes quieter and less entangled, our thoughts may also begin to feel clearer. Beneath the familiar stories and conditioned reactions, we can become more receptive to a deeper awareness — an experience of connection, unity and the Divine.

The LiberatingTouch® Detachment Process

The Infinity Exercise forms part of the LiberatingTouch® Detachment Process.

At the heart of the practice is the ancient and familiar shape of infinity: ∞.

  1. Imagine a large Infinity symbol before you. See or sense yourself resting within one of its loops. In the other loop, gently place whatever you wish to create some space from. This might be a person, a situation, an emotion, an expectation, a memory, an object or even a thought that has been occupying too much of your attention. There is no need to reject it, fight it or make it disappear. You are simply allowing it to have its own space while you return to yours.
  2. Now imagine a beautiful white light travelling continuously around the Infinity symbol. You may experience this light as a luminous serpent, a flowing stream or simply a radiant movement of energy. Allow it to travel around your loop, cross through the centre of the Infinity symbol and continue around the opposite loop before returning again. It may move clockwise or counter-clockwise. There is no need to force the experience; simply allow the movement to unfold naturally in your imagination.
  3. This flowing movement creates a symbolic boundary between you and the “other”. Rather than cutting yourself off, you are creating enough inner space to observe clearly, breathe more freely and reconnect with your own centre.

Within LiberatingTouch, this practice is sometimes affectionately called “Infinitising.”

Creating Sacred Space Within

When we become emotionally caught up with another person or situation, it can feel as though there is no space between what is happening and our reaction to it.

The Infinity Exercise reminds us that space is available.

As the light continues to move through the two loops, imagine each side becoming clearer and more distinct. You remain within your own field of awareness, while the person, thought or circumstance rests within theirs.

You are not pushing anything away.
You are not trying to control another person.
You are not denying what you feel.

You are simply releasing the need to remain entangled with it.

The continuous movement of the Infinity symbol can become a visual language for the subconscious mind, a gentle message that says:

I can be present without being bound.
I can care without losing myself.
I can observe without becoming consumed.
I can release what I do not need to carry.

As old emotional associations begin to soften, energy that has been tied up in worry, resistance, fear or habitual reactions may become available to us again. We can use that energy for awareness, creativity, compassion and inspired action.

Returning to Your Centre

We all experience moments when another person’s words catch us unexpectedly. A conversation becomes heated. Someone makes a remark and suddenly an old wound is activated. We may feel criticised, pressured, misunderstood or pulled into a situation we would rather not be part of.

These are often the moments when the Infinity Exercise can be most helpful.

You do not necessarily need to stop what you are doing or perform a formal practice.

Simply remember ∞.
See it in your mind.
Trace it gently with a finger if you wish.

Imagine yourself within one loop and place the person, problem, emotion or situation within the other. Then allow the white light to begin its graceful journey around the two loops.

Even a few moments of this practice may remind you that you have choices.

You do not have to follow every thought.
You do not have to enter every argument.
You do not have to carry every emotion that passes through your awareness.

You can create space.
And within that space, something changes.

Instead of being swept into the story, you can become the one who witnesses it. From there, you may discover greater clarity about what needs to be said, what needs to be done and sometimes, what simply needs to be released.

The Infinity Exercise is ultimately an invitation to return home to yourself.
Again and again, the symbol ∞ can remind us that beneath the changing experiences of life there is a deeper presence, spacious, peaceful and whole.
